Kolkata, Oct 24 Kolkata Police have made elaborate security arrangements in an around the city as immersion of Durga idols will take place on Tuesday on the occasion of Vijaya Dashami.

A senior Kolkata Police official said pressure on the immersion ghats will be comparatively less on Tuesday and it will start increasing from Wednesday.

“On the occasion of Vijaya Dashami, puja organisers mainly in housing complexes and individual residences go for immersion. Only a few extremely conservative community Durga Puja committees believe in following the tradition of going for immersion on the occasion of Vijaya Dashami on this day. So the pressure at the immersion ghats is likely to be less today. But we are not showing any laxity in making security arrangements,” he added.

Also on Tuesday, medium to heavy showers have been forecast for the city.

This year, immersion of the idols will take place at 34 ghats, besides 40 other lakes and artificial water-bodies.

The Kolkata Police have also decided to take strong action against Puja committees who use loud DJ music while proceeding for the immersion.

Police pickets will be deployed at 238 locations in the city.

Each picketing team will be led by an officer in the rank of assistant commissioner of police.

At the same time, the city police have banned the movement and entry of heavy good vehicles in Kolkata from 8 a.m. on Tuesday till 5 a.m. on Wednesday.
