Kohima, Feb 12 Ex-servicemen rally for veterans of the Armed Forces and Assam Rifles from Nagaland and Assam was held at Bhagat Stadium, Rangapahar Military Station in Dimapur on Wednesday.

A record number of over 1,300 ex-servicemen, including 33 war veterans from the 1962 Indo-China War, the 1971 Indo-Pak War and the 1999 Kargil War participated in the event.

Senior officials from the Armed Forces, state government and ex-servicemen associations were present in the mega joint event, where 16 Veer Naris and four Veer Matas were also present.

Organised by headquarters Spear Corps, the rally aims to honour ex-servicemen, Veer Naris, widows and their families, while addressing their welfare needs.

Lieutenant General Abhijit S Pendharkar, General Officer Commanding (GOC) of Spear Corps served as the chief guest alongside Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio.

Lt Gen Pendharkar in his address acknowledged the sacrifices and contributions of the ex-servicemen and their families, emphasising the continued role they play in society even after retirement.

He reaffirmed the Armed Forces’ commitment to supporting their welfare and encouraged them to take advantage of the various assistance programmes.

The senior Army officer also highlighted the importance of Sainik School Punglwa in Nagaland and urged the ex-servicemen to enrol their children, emphasising the scholarships available for students.

Chief Minister Rio expressed his deep gratitude to the ex-servicemen and Veer Naris, recognising their sacrifices and unwavering dedication to the nation. He emphasised that their selfless service has not only safeguarded the country’s security but also inspired future generations.

Acknowledging the hardships faced by the veterans and their families, he assured them that the state government remains committed to their welfare.

Highlighting various initiatives, Rio spoke about government schemes designed to support ex-servicemen including financial aid, health insurance, and pension benefits.

He stressed that special provisions have been made for the education of their children, particularly through scholarships and reserved seats in professional courses.

The Chief Minister urged the veterans to take full advantage of these programmes, ensuring a secure future for their families. Rio also commended the Armed Forces and Assam Rifles for conducting free recruitment coaching for Naga youth, enhancing their opportunities in defence services.

He encouraged young people to consider a career in the military, emphasising that serving in the Armed Forces is one of the highest forms of patriotism.

He assured the gathering that the state government would continue to collaborate with the defence forces to provide better career prospects for aspiring soldiers from Nagaland, the Chief Minister announced.

Recognising the challenges faced by Veer Naris and war widows, Rio pledged the government’s unwavering support in addressing their concerns. He stressed the importance of empowering them through skill development programs and financial assistance, enabling them to lead dignified and independent lives.

He reaffirmed the government’s dedication to working closely with the Armed Forces to ensure that ex-servicemen and their families receive the respect, support, and care they deserve.

The rally featured welfare assistance counters to address pension-related concerns, medical checkups, legal aid, and financial planning support.

Special medical devices such as wheelchairs, walking sticks, and hearing aids were distributed to veterans, Veer Naris, and war widows.

Several war veterans, gallantry award recipients, and Veer Naris were honoured during the event. The programme also included cultural performances and a military band display.
