If your FASTag number and your vehicle registration number do not match, you may soon face serious inconvenience. Authorities have warned that any mismatch between these two details could lead to your FASTag being deactivated and even placed on a blacklist. Several complaints have been received from toll plazas where discrepancies were detected between the vehicle number and the data captured by FASTag scanners. Taking note of these issues, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has directed all banks issuing FASTags to verify and ensure that the information linked to each tag is accurate and up to date.

NHAI has issued strict instructions to banks, asking them to thoroughly verify whether a FASTag is being used on the same vehicle for which it was originally issued. Banks have been told to conduct detailed checks to rule out any misuse, manipulation, or irregularities in the system. If any discrepancy or error is found in a FASTag, it must be immediately deactivated and blacklisted without delay. The authority has emphasized that there should be zero tolerance for inconsistencies, and all issuing agencies must act promptly to maintain the integrity and reliability of the toll collection system.

In an official statement, NHAI clarified that re-verification of all FASTag-related information is necessary to eliminate any inconsistencies. The primary objective behind this move is to ensure that the toll collection system functions smoothly without errors or loopholes. It was also pointed out that a large number of such mismatches are linked to FASTags that were issued before the vehicle database was formally and accurately integrated into the system. These legacy issues are now being addressed through stricter verification processes and improved monitoring mechanisms.

Looking ahead, NHAI has highlighted the need to strengthen technological systems to avoid such problems in the future. In the initial phase, verification processes were limited and largely dependent on manual methods, which led to gaps in accuracy. However, the authority has announced plans to implement advanced tolling solutions such as the Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) system across the country. To ensure the success of this modern system, special emphasis is being placed on accurate mapping between FASTag details and the Vehicle Registration Number (VRN), ensuring a seamless and efficient toll collection experience.
