In  a shocking turn of events,  a father-son duo, who were on their way to celebrate Diwali with their family died when a bag of countrymade firecrackers that they were carrying on a scooter in a gunny bag exploded. The tragic incident took place in Kottakuppam of the Villupuram district near the Puducherry-Tamil Nadu border. The deceased man has been identified as K Kalainsesan (37) and was a native of Ariyankuppam in Puducherry. The seven-year-old deceased son has been identified as K Pradeesh. They were on the way to their in-law’s house in Koonimedu in Villupuram district of Tamil Nadu.The father-son duo was travelling on a scooter and the vehicle shattered due to the explosion, killing both on spot. According to the police, three others who were injured following the explosion were immediately rushed to Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) hospital. The father-son duo was carrying two bags full of country fireworks, which they had bought from their locality. Reportedly, Ariyankuppam is known for its cheap country fireworks.

When they crossed Kottakuppam, the firecrackers in one of the gunny bags exploded which led to a huge explosion killing them on spot. The gigantic explosion was so intense that the bodies of the deceased were scattered into several pieces and fell a few metres away from the spot where the accident occurred. Several higher authorities visited the site which included Villupuram superintendent of police N Shreenatha and Villupuram DIG M Pandian. The police made preliminary inquiries about the explosion along with a team of forensic experts who took samples of the fireworks remains. Police have suspected friction and excessive heat from the scooter to be a major reason for the fireworks explosion.
