A gold treasure has been found in an ancient temple in Kanchipuram. The villagers have been refusing to hand over this to the revenue department.  Kulambeswarar Temple is a 500 year old temple located in Uthiramerur Kanchipuram District. The people of the city worked hard to consecrate the temple. Then during the reconstruction of the temple a pile of gold was found. About 561 grams of gold was found. i.e. more than half a kilo. The villagers have stated categorically that the gold cannot be handed over to the revenue department.

The villagers have decided to keep these jewels safely under the new temple to avoid any controversy. Knowing this, the Revenue Department asked them to hand over the jewellery but the villagers refused to hand over. Following this, the police and the revenue department held talks with the villagers. Following this, even the higher authorities also held talks with the villagers. Now the uthorities have given the villagers, an hours time to return the items to the government. However the villagers refused to listen fearing the items may get misused by govt officials. The gold ornaments found in this temple may date back to the 16th century. Historians have suggested that it may have been buried to protect it from alien invasion. The villagers are of the view that they are willing to give the gold back if they manage to keep the gold treasures safe.
