The Government of India has announced that military personnel who have received gallantry awards, along with their spouses, will now be entitled to free travel in certain categories on Indian Railways. Instructions regarding this benefit have been formally issued to railway authorities. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, Indian Railways offered fare concessions across multiple categories, benefiting a wide range of passengers. However, these concessions were significantly reduced during the pandemic period. According to a report by ANI citing a defence official, the government has now taken a step to reinstate select benefits, specifically recognising the service and sacrifices of decorated armed forces personnel.
As per the newly issued order, recipients of gallantry awards from the Army, Navy, and Air Force will be eligible for lifelong free travel on Indian Railways, along with their spouses. Widows will continue to receive this benefit until remarriage. Additionally, they will be permitted to travel with one companion under this scheme. In cases where gallantry awards have been conferred posthumously on unmarried personnel, their parents will be granted the same lifelong free travel facility, along with one companion. This benefit will apply to travel in First Class, AC 2-tier, and AC Chair Car categories, ensuring comfortable journeys for the beneficiaries.
Prior to the COVID-19 outbreak, Indian Railways had provisions for concessional travel across nearly 50 categories, including senior citizens and various other groups. These concessions were withdrawn during the pandemic as part of cost-cutting and safety measures. Although some concessions were gradually reintroduced later, their scope remains far more limited compared to the pre-pandemic period. The latest decision, however, highlights a focused approach to honour individuals who have demonstrated exceptional courage and service to the nation, restoring at least a portion of the earlier benefits in a more targeted manner.
Gallantry awards in the Indian Armed Forces are among the highest recognitions for extraordinary bravery, valour, and sacrifice displayed by personnel. These awards are broadly classified into two categories: wartime and peacetime honours. Wartime gallantry awards are conferred for acts of bravery in the face of the enemy and include prestigious decorations such as the Param Vir Chakra, Maha Vir Chakra, and Vir Chakra. Peacetime gallantry awards, on the other hand, recognise acts of courage during non-war situations, including counter-terrorism operations and rescue missions, and include the Ashoka Chakra, Kirti Chakra, and Shaurya Chakra.
