Gandhinagar, May 6 Nearly one-third of the daily revenue of the Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation (GSRTC) is now generated through digital payments, as the state-run transporter expands cashless systems across its network.
Officials said around 30 per cent of GSRTC’s daily income is received through cashless modes, following the introduction of multiple digital payment options across more than 8,000 buses in the state.
These include UPI, debit cards and credit cards, available through online booking, mobile applications and on-the-spot ticketing via QR codes issued by conductors.
In Gandhinagar, the corporation said the growing use of digital transactions has improved operational efficiency and transparency while reducing reliance on cash among passengers.
On average, about 27 lakh passengers travel daily on GSRTC buses, generating an estimated revenue of Rs 12 crore.
“On average, 27 lakh passengers travel on the corporation’s buses, generating an estimated daily revenue of around Rs 12 crore. Of this, nearly 30 per cent now comes from digital payments. Daily digital collections have increased from around Rs 1 crore a year ago to more than Rs 2 crore at present, and the figure continues to grow. We are moving towards a cashless economy, and this initiative is part of efforts to strengthen the digital ecosystem,” said Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi.
Passengers are increasingly adopting digital payment methods for convenience.
Manish Ghanchi, a resident of Ahmedabad, recently travelled to Vadodara on a GSRTC premium bus and paid for his ticket by scanning a QR code generated by the conductor.
“GSRTC’s initiative is truly commendable. Thousands of people like me regularly use only digital payments. This system is extremely convenient for them,” he said.
The corporation has also digitised payments for student passes, contributing to increased cashless revenue.
Officials noted that nearly 85 per cent of GSRTC’s total digital transactions are carried out through UPI, indicating its widespread use across Gujarat.
The initiative forms part of broader digital governance efforts under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel.
Deputy Chief Minister Sanghavi has also emphasised the need to strengthen digital infrastructure and expand bus services in remote areas, with a focus on improving passenger convenience and increasing daily ridership.
Officials said the corporation plans to further expand cashless transactions in the coming months.
“In the coming months, we aim to increase the share of digital payments to 60 to 70 per cent. For this, the digital payment system will also be extended to commercial services and passenger pass systems,” a GSRTC official said.
