Ahmedabad, March 11 Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has approved redevelopment projects worth approximately Rs 1,003 crore for Phase-2 of the Kharikat Canal Re-Development in Ahmedabad.
The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) will undertake redevelopment work on the existing canal across five designated stretches. Stretch-1 will cover the section from S.P. Ring Road to Naroda Crematorium, Stretch-2 from Vinzol Vahela to Ghodasar (Avkar Hall), Stretch-3 from Ghodasar (Avkar Hall) to Vatva Village, and Stretch-4 and 5 from Vatva Village to S.P. Ring Road.
The project includes the development of RCC stormwater box structures, roads, footpaths, retaining walls, water supply pipelines, irrigation structures, stormwater extensions, and sewer systems.
Kharikat Canal, constructed by the Irrigation Department, runs through the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) limits.
While Phase-1 covered specific sections, Phase-2 will focus on the remaining open stretch of the canal, extending from S.P. Ring Road through Muthiya Village to Naroda Crematorium, and from Vinzol Vahela through Ghodasar and Vatva to S.P. Ring Road.
The growing urban expansion of Ahmedabad has led to increased pollution and waste accumulation in the canal due to uncontrolled disposal of solid waste, posing a public health hazard.
Additionally, connectivity issues for TP (Town Planning) areas on both sides of the canal have become a major concern.
In response, CM Bhupendra Patel has entrusted AMC with the responsibility of efficiently executing the Kharikat Canal redevelopment to address these issues.
In Phase-1, which covered a 12.75-km stretch from Naroda Crematorium to Vinzol Vahela, 80 per cent of the work has been completed.
The total budget for Phase-1 was Rs 1,338 crore, out of which over Rs 700 crore has already been spent. With Phase-2, the remaining sections of the canal will now be redeveloped across five different stretches, with full funding allocated under the Swarnim Jayanti Mukhyamantri Shehri Vikas Yojana (Golden Jubilee Chief Minister Urban Development Scheme).
Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation will oversee the execution of this project, ensuring a cleaner and well-developed canal that enhances urban infrastructure, connectivity, and public health.
