New Delhi, May 2 A 47-year-old man has been arrested within 36 hours for allegedly stealing Rs 3.85 lakh from a shop in Chawri Bazar in Delhi, where he had been working, police officials said on Saturday.
The case came to light on April 29 when information regarding a theft was received at Hauz Qazi Police Station. The complainant registered e-FIR under Section 305 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), stating that he runs a shop named Shyam Sweets in the Chawri Bazar area.
According to the complaint, on April 28 at around 9:00 P.M., he left the shop after instructing his manager and helper, identified as Sanjay, to shut the premises by 10:00 P.M.
However, during the intervening night, the helper allegedly took the shop keys, reopened the establishment and decamped with Rs 3,85,000 kept in the cash box.
Police said the incident was corroborated through CCTV footage.
Officials stated that a dedicated police team comprising ASI Pankaj, Head Constable Manoj and Head Constable Ravi was formed under the close supervision of the SHO of PS Hauz Qazi and overall monitoring of the ACP of Kamla Market to trace and apprehend the accused.
During the investigation, the accused was found to be absconding, with only his mobile number available as a crucial lead. Technical surveillance was initiated, which revealed 'C-type' tower locations suggesting his movement between Morena and Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh, officials said.
"Despite frequent location changes by the accused to evade arrest, the team persistently tracked and followed the trail. Demonstrating determination and coordination, the team conducted an interstate chase and successfully apprehended the accused from Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh," police said.
The accused has been identified as Sanjay Sharma, a resident of Gwalior.
During sustained interrogation, he allegedly confessed that he had recently joined the shop as a helper and carried out the theft after becoming familiar with the premises and gaining access to the keys.
Police further revealed that the accused is educated up to Class 8 and has been working intermittently at sweet shops in Delhi for the past 12 to 13 years. He had also worked at the same shop briefly during the Deepawali period, officials added.
