A 33-year-old man was arrested in Kolkata for allegedly stabbing his 58-year-old mother to death. The incident occurred in the Rajarhat Vedic Village area. The accused, Soumik Majumdar, confessed to the crime in front of the police. He admitted to stabbing his mother, Debjani Majumdar, and sitting beside her body overnight.

Police said the murder took place late Thursday night after a heated argument between the two. Soumik allegedly used a knife to kill his mother. The crime came to light the next day when Soumik visited a tea vendor and confessed, saying "I have killed my mother. I haven't eaten anything all night. Is there something to eat?"

The tea vendor immediately informed the police. Officers who arrived at the scene found bloodstains on the floor and multiple stab wounds on Debjani’s neck and shoulder. A blood-soaked chair was also found near the body. Police believe the murder occurred between 11 PM and midnight Thursday.

Soumik reportedly tried to stage the murder as a suicide by placing the weapon near his mother’s body and wiping his own wounds. However, his confession led to his arrest.

Soumik denied committing the crime after his arrest.

The Majumdar family had lived in the Vedic Village Apartment since 2021 after the death of Soumik’s father, Soumendra Majumdar. The flat had been purchased by Soumik’s father, and he had been living there with his mother since then.
