Guwahati, Feb 14 At least five infiltrators from Bangladesh including four Rohingyas were pushed back by Assam Police for illegally entering Indian territory, said Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday.
The incident happened in the Sribhumi district of the state. Sarma wrote on X, “Five Illegal Infiltrators pushed back. Maintaining strict vigil along the Indo-Bangladesh border, @sribhumipolice apprehended 4 Rohingyas & 1 Bangladeshi near the border and pushed them back.”
The persons have been identified as Abdul Raazzak, Saddam Hussein, Moktul Hussain, Nurul Amin and Hafsa Bibi. The Chief Minister mentioned that the state administration would continue the strict vigil along the border.
Sarma earlier stated that the Bangladeshi infiltration spiked up in the last few months due to the collapse of the textile industry in the neighbouring country leaving many jobless there. He stated that the economy of Bangladesh has collapsed due to unrest and the majority community people were more affected than the minority section.
“So far, we have arrested around 1000 Bangladeshi people in the last few months. They were pushed back immediately after their arrest,” the Chief Minister mentioned. He also attributed the illegal infiltration to incentives offered by a few textile industry owners in India.
Sarma also said that he took up the issue of Bangladeshi infiltration with Union Home Minister Amit Shah during the meeting of the North Eastern Council (NEC).
“I have discussed these things with other Chief Ministers of northeastern states,” he added.
He also said: “There is no chance that people cross illegally the international border from Bangladesh and get themselves enrolled in the voter list in Assam because we have caught many people who illegally entered Indian territory and they were pushed back within a few hours. Most of the infiltrators were arrested around 5 AM and before 9 AM, they were pushed back to the neighbouring country. In two or three hours, they can not register themselves in the voter list.”
However, the Chief Minister sees no harm in remaining double vigilant in this matter.
