Jammu (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], April 1 : Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary on Wednesday criticised Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha over the removal of security for MLAs in the state following the Ganderbal encounter, calling the situation a "joke of democracy."

Speaking to reporters, Choudhary alleged that MLA security is being provided on a selective basis. He questioned the DGP about the Ganderbal encounter, asking whether the situation in the state is truly normal.

"The LG is removing the security of a few MLAs. We should also ask the DGP why the Ganderbal encounter is underway if the situation is normal in J&K. A few days ago, there was an attack on Dr Farooq Abdullah. Now, you are giving security to only select MLAs on a pick-and-choose basis. This is a joke of democracy. I hope the LG will intervene and do justice in this matter," said Choudhary.

Meanwhile, National Conference MLA Tanvir Sadiq highlighted the contradiction between claims of normalcy and ongoing terror incidents.

" On one hand, we say that the situation is normal in J&K now. But on the other hand, such incidents show that terror incidents are still happening here. To stop such incidents, everyone must contribute irrespective of their political background," Sadiq told ANI.

One terrorist was eliminated by security forces during a cordon and search operation in the Arhama area of Ganderbal district of Jammu and Kashmir, officials said on Wednesday.

According to the Indian Army, the operation was launched on Tuesday night, following which intermittent firing was reported, prompting security forces to tactically reorganise the cordon. The Army said troops responded effectively with a calibrated approach, leading to the elimination of one terrorist.

"During the night of 31 March 2026, the cordon was tactically reorganised amidst the intermittent firing underway. Own troops effectively retaliated with a calibrated response, resulting in one terrorist being eliminated. Operation is in progress," Indian Army said in a statement.

Further details are awaited.
