In a significant attack, an Indian Army vehicle was targeted in a terror incident near Gulmarg, resulting in injuries to at least five soldiers. This attack occurred in the Botapather area of North Kashmir's Gulmarg. The incident unfolded just hours after a laborer, Pritam Singh, from Uttar Pradesh, was shot and injured in Ganderbal district, Jammu and Kashmir. This marks the second attack in the region within 72 hours.
The situation in Ganderbal has escalated following a series of violent assaults targeting civilians. The latest incident involved an attack on Pritam Singh, a resident of Uttar Pradesh, who was injured in an event described as part of a troubling pattern of violence in the area. Just three days prior, a horrific attack took place at a housing camp for construction workers, resulting in the deaths of six workers and a doctor. Among the victims were Dr. Shahnawaz from Budgam, Gurmeet Singh from Gurdaspur in Punjab, and Mohammad Haneef, Faheem Nasir, and Kaleem from Bihar. The other victims included Anil Shukla from Madhya Pradesh and Shashi Abrol from Jammu. The attackers left behind an INSAS rifle, indicating the violent nature of the assault.
Omar Abdullah, the newly elected Chief Minister, condemned the attack, describing it as "dastardly and cowardly." He expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and highlighted the innocent nature of those targeted, who were working on essential infrastructure projects.
These recent attacks have raised significant concerns about civilian safety in the region, especially following Abdullah's election victory on October 8, which marked the first such event in a decade. In the aftermath of the assaults, police conducted raids across several districts, including Srinagar, Ganderbal, and Bandipora, targeting a newly formed terrorist group known as Tehreek Labaik Ya Muslim (TLM). These operations aimed to dismantle a recruitment module linked to the group, which is reportedly involved in recruiting young men for terrorist activities.
