A complaint has been filed alleging that the convoy of the Congress MP Shashi Tharoor was blocked in the middle of the road in Kerala's Malappuram district and his staff, including his gunman, was assaulted on Friday evening, April 3. 

The incident reportedly took place near Thiruvalli Chellithodu bridge, where Tharoor's car was blocked while he was heading towards Wandoor for an election campaign event for Kerala Assembly elections, according to the news agency IANS.

Wandoor Police registered a case based on Tharoor’s gunman, who was assaulted by a group of men on the road. After the investigation, the police detained three suspects in the assault case and a case has been registered against one accused identified as Ummara, a native of Kalikavu, team Shashi Tharoor told IANS.

According to reports, Tharoor was travelling to Wandoor to campaign for UDF candidate AP Anilkumar at the time of the incident. The Congress leader's team was travelling in two different vehicles when around eight people stopped their vehicles and did not allow them to proceed.

When a member of Tharoor's security team got down to interfere, he was attacked. However, local police did not find any political angle in the incident. Kerala will vote in a single phase on April 9. The counting of votes will be on May 4.
