Bedi underlined the need for beat policing across the country. "Through beat policing, we can know about every resident in the area. There should be a beat box or booth in every locality where people can come with their problems and the concerned constable should solve them. When I was posted in Delhi, I had set up beat boxes and the Magsaysay award that I was given also mentions beat policing as an achievement," she said.

The All India Police Science Congress (AIPSC) is being held in Lucknow after a gap of almost 22 years. The last time the event was held here was in 1997.

UP DGP O.P. Singh said that the event was being organised by the home ministry and the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPRD).

During various sessions of the AIPSC, police officers, research scholars and others will present their papers.

Subjects selected for the Congress include reforms in policing, challenges at field level and required measures, forensic sciences, resource upgradation and effective use in investigation, and safety of women and children and fresh initiatives and dividends.

Besides these, the other subjects that will be discussed include the role of social media in countering radicalization and terrorism, right kind of attitudes in police officers - training and beyond and use of CCTNS (Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems)/Interoperable Criminal Justice System (ICJS) in advancement of criminal justice.

Police officers from all states are attending the two-day event. Union home minister Amit Shah is expected to attend the concluding session on Friday.
