Kolkata Police arrested at least 10 people in overnight raids in the Golpark area of south Kolkata after clashes between two groups on Sunday night, February 1. According to reports, two people were injured in the incident where firing, stone pelting and bombs were hurled.
Kolkata Police Commissioner Supratim Sarkar said, "Regarding last night’s incident, we conducted raids throughout the night, arresting 10 people so far. All others involved will be arrested soon"
The clashes broke out at around 8.30 pm when around 200 people belonging a Sona Pappu gang allegedly started hurling bombs in the area and attacked people with sticks. A police van was also vandalised by clashing groups.
Stones were pelted when a group of people returning from a picnic was intercepted by a gang. Gunshots were also fired in the clashes, according to The Times of India report.
The violence is reportedly linked to a long-standing turf war between two rival groups to establish control over the area. TMC councillor Baiswanar Chattopadhyay said the unrest stemmed from a dispute related to a picnic.
“We are assessing the situation. Two persons have been injured, and we are providing them medical help. Whoever and in whatever capacity is found to be involved will face legal action. We will register a case,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Bhola Nath Pandey told The Indian Express.
