Mysuru, April 10 Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel H.D. Kumaraswamy visited the residence of a critically ill woman in Hullalli village of Nanjangud taluk in Mysuru district on Friday, and extended support to her family after a video highlighting her condition went viral on social media.
The woman, identified as 24‑year‑old Pooja, has been bedridden for several months due to severe health complications. A youth had recorded and shared a video of her condition on social media, urging people to circulate it until it reached Kumaraswamy. After watching the video, the minister personally visited her home to assess the situation and offer assistance.
Kumaraswamy spent nearly 45 minutes interacting with Pooja, her husband Ravi, and her parents Kumar and Sheela.
He assured the family of his support and comforted them during the visit. The family was visibly emotional upon his arrival, and Pooja broke down on seeing the minister.
The minister also gathered details about the family’s condition from local residents, Janata Dal (Secular) leaders, panchayat officials, and the tahsildar.
He appreciated the youth, Chetan, who had shared the video and helped raise awareness of the issue.
Pooja has been undergoing treatment for a spinal condition, but complications from the treatment have affected both her legs. She has already undergone surgery on one leg, which was unsuccessful, and recently underwent another operation on the other leg. Despite multiple surgeries, her condition has not improved, and she remains unable to walk.
The family is facing severe financial hardship. They do not own a house and are currently living in a small rented home, struggling to pay a monthly rent of Rs 3,000. Pooja’s father had earlier sold their house and a small piece of land to fund her treatment. Her husband, Ravi, is also bedridden after being injured in a Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation bus accident, leaving the family without any source of income.
Moved by their plight, Kumaraswamy provided immediate financial assistance for medical treatment.
He also assured the family that arrangements would be made to provide them with a leased house within a week to ten days. He entrusted local leaders, including MLA Harish Gowda and MLC Manjegowda, with the responsibility of arranging the accommodation and monitoring the family’s condition.
The minister also spoke to the house owner by phone, requesting more time for the family on humanitarian grounds and offering to pay the lease amount himself. However, the owner informed him that the house was being put up for sale.
Kumaraswamy then directed local leaders to make alternative arrangements and said he would also discuss the matter with the Mysuru Deputy Commissioner and the Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer.
The family also raised concerns about Ravi’s accident case, stating that there had been no progress in court proceedings. Kumaraswamy immediately spoke to the concerned lawyer and later contacted the Managing Director of the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation, urging him to facilitate compensation for the family.
The Managing Director assured that the matter would be resolved, possibly through a Lok Adalat.
The minister instructed the tahsildar to arrange a small shop for the family’s livelihood and directed party leaders to ensure medical treatment for both Pooja and her husband in Mysuru. MLC S.N. Manjegowda also assured support for the education of the couple’s children.
Several leaders, including MLA Harish Gowda, MLC C.N. Manjegowda, former MLA Mahadev, and Ashwin Kumar, along with other Janata Dal (Secular) members, were present during the visit.
Earlier in the day, Kumaraswamy, along with his wife Anita Kumaraswamy, visited Chamundi Hills and offered prayers to Goddess Chamundeshwari. He later visited Nanjangud and offered prayers at the Sri Nanjundeshwara temple, praying for the welfare and prosperity of the state.
