Comedian Kunal Kamra is currently facing significant backlash following his recent comments about Maharashtra's Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. Kamra, known for his satirical and often controversial comedy, recently mocked Shinde during a live show, calling him a "traitor" for his role in the 2022 rebellion that led to the fall of the Uddhav Thackeray-led MVA government.
Shiv Sena, responded sharply to Kamra's remarks. Party workers, particularly from the youth wing, took to the streets in protest. The situation escalated in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, where Shiv Sena activists went a step further by posting Kamra's photograph outside a public toilet at Bengali Square. They raised slogans condemning Kamra and his comments. Anurag Sonar, president of the Yuva Sena's Madhya Pradesh unit, made a bold statement, saying, "Kamra serves filth to people in the name of comedy. To protest against his dirty mentality, we have put up his picture here. If he ever visits Madhya Pradesh, Shiv Sena workers will blacken his face and parade him on the streets."
In response to the comedian’s comments, Shiv Sena issued a stern warning of potential legal action against Kamra. Tensions also escalated when several party workers vandalized the venue where Kamra’s show was recorded. In the aftermath, 12 party leaders were arrested, though they were later released on bail.The protests and actions by Shiv Sena have prompted a police case to be filed against Kunal Kamra for his inflammatory remarks, and he has also been summoned by the Mumbai police for questioning.
Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister, Eknath Shinde, responded to the controversy, stating that Kamra’s comments were akin to taking a "supari" (contract) to speak against someone. Shinde acknowledged the importance of free speech but emphasized that there should be limits, particularly when it comes to mocking individuals in such a personal and provocative manner. While Shinde condemned the vandalism, he also added that actions often provoke reactions.
