Siachen Avalanche: At least three soldiers were killed when an avalanche struck a forward base camp in the Siachen Glacier on Tuesday, September 9, 2025.  Rescue operations were launched immediately following the incident. According to the India Today reports, the soldiers belonged to the Mahar Regiment and came from Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand. They were trapped for five hours before being recovered. An Army captain was rescued.

The Siachen Glacier, located over 18,000 feet above sea level, is one of the world’s highest and most challenging military postings. The region is known for extreme weather and frequent snow-related incidents.

The army has faced casualties in Siachen over the years due to avalanches and frostbite. Troops maintain a continuous presence to secure strategic positions near the Line of Control. Soldiers posted there undergo specialised high-altitude training and are equipped to survive sub-zero temperatures.
