The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has announced a complete ban on animal slaughter and the sale of meat within its jurisdiction for Maha Shivaratri. The restriction will be in place on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, in observance of the Hindu festival. As a result, all slaughterhouses and meat shops in Bengaluru will remain closed throughout the day.

The BBMP shared this information on X (formerly Twitter), stating: "On the occasion of Maha Shivaratri Festival, the slaughter of animals in slaughterhouses and the sale of meat in outlets under BBMP jurisdiction is strictly prohibited on Wednesday, February 26, 2025." Such bans are regularly enforced by the BBMP during major religious occasions, including Gandhi Jayanti and other key Hindu festivals.

Earlier this year, the BBMP had also prohibited the sale and serving of meat within a 13-kilometer radius of Yelahanka Air Force Station from January 23 to February 17, in preparation for Aero India 2025. This ban was implemented ahead of the airshow, which took place from February 10 to February 14. The BBMP had issued a warning that violations would lead to penalties under the BBMP Act 2020 and the Indian Aircraft Rules of 1937, Rule 91.Additionally, the BBMP had enforced a similar ban on January 30 in observance of Sarvodaya Day (Martyrs' Day), a day that commemorates the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and honors those who sacrificed their lives for the nation.
