Nagpur, April 9 Congress Legislative Party Leader Vijay Wadettiwar on Thursday formally wrote to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, demanding immediate implementation of a Supreme Court ruling regarding the Teacher Aptitude and Intelligence Test (TAIT) 2022 teacher recruitment process.
The move aims to address the alleged injustice faced by candidates from backward classes.
Wadettiwar highlighted that, due to flawed decisions by the state’s Education Department, approximately 8,000 Other Backward Class candidates have been excluded from the recruitment process despite possessing the required merit.
The controversy stems from candidates who availed a five per cent relaxation in the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) but subsequently scored higher marks in the Teacher Aptitude and Intelligence Test (TAIT) than candidates in the open category.
Under previous departmental rules, these high-scoring reserved category candidates were barred from competing for open-category seats. Wadettiwar labelled this decision “unconstitutional and unjust.”
In Chhaya and Others vs. State of Maharashtra, the Supreme Court delivered its final verdict on March 23, 2026. The court ruled that reserved category candidates who score higher than the last candidate in the open category must be included in the open merit list.
Denying the migration of merit-based reserved candidates to the open category is illegal and unconstitutional, Wadettiwar said.
According to Wadettiwar, the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) is merely a qualifying exam; any relaxation provided during it does not negate a candidate’s merit in the final recruitment stage (TAIT).
Wadettiwar put forth four primary demands to ensure justice for the affected educators.
He called for an immediate review of the entire TAIT-2022 merit list and for the prompt publication of a corrected, updated merit list.
He also demanded the integration of high-scoring reserved-category candidates into the open category and the allotment of the resulting vacancies in the reserved categories to the next eligible candidates from the Other Backward Class and backward classes.
“The state government must issue clear and immediate directives to the relevant departments to respect the Supreme Court’s decision and provide justice to these qualified candidates,” Wadettiwar stated in his letter.
