Bhopal, March 24 The fast-track court of Mhow delivered a verdict on Monday, sentencing five of the accused to life imprisonment for the gravity of their heinous crimes.
Six months after the harrowing assault on a trainee army officer and the gang rape of his female friend at Jam Gate in Mhow, Indore district justice has finally been delivered.
The courtroom bore witness to the testimonies of over 30 individuals, each piece of evidence weaving a narrative against the perpetrators.
Central to the case was the DNA report, a silent yet irrefutable witness that sealed the fate of the accused.
Despite there was no eyewitness nor close circuit cameras and darkness, the evidence spoke volumes for the crime. Among the six accused, one -- a minor -- continues to face trial in the Juvenile Court.
The convicted men -- Anil Baror (27), the prime accused, along with Pawan Bansunia (23), Ritesh Bhabhar (25), Rohit Girwal (23), and Sachin Makwana (25) -- now face the weight of life imprisonment for their unspeakable acts.
The nightmare began on the night of September 10, 2024 when two trainee officers and their female friends sought a moment of respite at the Army Firing Range near Jam Gate, within the jurisdiction of Badgonda police station, Mhow.
Sadly their gathering around early morning hours at 2 a.m. turned into a scene of terror just thirty minutes later.
A gang of seven to eight men, armed with sticks and rods, descended upon them like predators in the night.
The officers bore the brunt of the savage attack, they endured relentless beatings. In the chaos, one officer dared to question their assailants who immediately demanded arrangement of Rs 10 lakh in cash -- or face death.
The attackers separated the group.
One officer and a woman were held hostage, while the other pair was sent to fetch the ransom. But when the pair failed to return, the attackers unleashed their darkest intentions.
The female hostage was subjected to unspeakable violence and gang-raped. The assailants later fled into the night. The incident sent shockwaves through the region, igniting outrage and a demand for justice.
The police acted with urgency, apprehending two of the culprits and later captured the rest. Recognising the severity of the crime, the administration ensured the case was fast-tracked.
The investigation progressed with speed, culminating in the filing of the charge sheet on October 12 -- almost a month after the crime. The evidence presented by the Badgonda police was damning. DNA analysis of the clothes worn by Anil and Ritesh, hair strands from the crime scene, blood samples, and the victim's DNA painted an undeniable picture.
While the victim's stolen Aadhaar card was never recovered, the police invoked Section 238 for destruction of evidence.
Additionally, a country-made pistol and live cartridges, reportedly used during the incident, were seized from Ritesh.
