There is some relief for citizens affected by the ongoing heatwave and harsh summer, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said the southwest monsoon is likely to arrive in Kerala ahead of schedule this year. According to the IMD forecast, the monsoon may reach the Kerala coast by May 26, 2026.
The weather department said favourable conditions are developing for the onset of the monsoon over the South Andaman Sea, Bay of Bengal, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands within the next 48 hours. The monsoon is expected to reach the Andaman region around May 16.
The IMD has also predicted heavy rainfall in several parts of North-East and South India over the next four to five days. Heavy rain is likely in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Puducherry and South Karnataka.
According to the forecast, North-East India may witness heavy to very heavy rainfall between May 13 and 19. IMD has also warned of strong winds ranging between 50 and 100 kmph in some areas. The department said a low-pressure area developing over the Bay of Bengal is expected to influence weather conditions across the country in the coming days.

The IMD said the monsoon is likely to reach Goa by June 5 and Konkan by June 6. Pune is expected to receive the monsoon by June 7.
Weather experts noted that no cyclone has formed in the Bay of Bengal or Arabian Sea during the initial phase of the monsoon this year, reducing the possibility of major disruptions in the monsoon’s progress.
