Odisha CM announces award after Suraj, who gave new life to 6

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Monday announced an annual award to encourage organ donation in the name of Suraj, whose organs were donated by his parents after he was declared brain dead on November 2.

"Suraj, who saved lives of six persons after death, has become an inspiring story for millions in Odisha. His name is now going to be immortalised as Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today announced to institute an annual award in his name," said a statement from the Chief Minister's Office (CMO).

Suraj was a resident of Bhanjanagar in Ganjam district and was working in Surat. He met with a fatal road accident on October 29. The doctors declared him brain dead on November 2.

His parents were contacted by a local NGO. They decided to donate his organs to save the lives of others. Accordingly, his heart, liver, two kidneys and both the eyes were transplanted to help six persons.

His heart was carried by a plane to Fortis Hospital in Mumbai and was transplanted in the body of a woman. Both his kidneys and the liver were transplanted into three persons in Ahmedabad and the two eyes went to two persons in Surat.

Suraj's father Babuli Sethi and mother Gitanjali Sethi on Monday met the Chief Minister here.

The Chief Minister highly appreciated their noble act and said this will be an exemplary inspiration to society.

Patnaik announced a homestead and Biju Pucca Ghar for them. He also announced an assistance of Rs 5 lakh from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund as a recognition of their humane act.
