Kolkata, May 18 Police action against Trinamool Congress leaders facing corruption charges continued across West Bengal, with multiple arrests reported in separate incidents, officials said on Monday.

In the first incident, former Dinhata Municipality chairman Gouri Shankar Maheshwari was arrested in the building plan approval fraud case last night. Just a day before, the police had arrested Dinhata Municipality employee Moumita Bhattacharya. Moumita was remanded to three days of police custody after she was produced before a court on Sunday.

In another incident, the Trinamool president of Durgapur Faridpur Block, Shatdeep Ghatak, was also arrested on charges of extortion and terrorism. He was accused of threatening BJP workers and inciting the common people. Police alleged that he had threatened BJP workers and local residents while extorting money over an extended period.

He was arrested during a late-night operation by the Faridpur police in the West Burdwan district and is set to be produced before the Durgapur sub-divisional court.

In one more incident, Trinamool worker Raju Ahowalia was also arrested in Asansol. The police arrested Raju in multiple cases, including extortion.

Kumaresh Bhuiyan, the working director of Daspur 1 Panchayat Samiti, is also in the police net. Kumaresh is the son of former Daspur MLA Mamata Bhuiyan. The police have arrested him on charges of extortion and hooliganism.

There have been allegations of corruption against Trinamool leaders during the previous government's 15-year rule in Bengal. Now, with the change of government in the state, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has issued a strict order giving the police free hand to take action on such allegations. Since then, police action has been going on in every district. Those who had corruption charges against them during the Trinamool rule have started falling into the police net one by one.
