India celebrates Republic Day every year on January 26 to mark the adoption of its Constitution in 1950. Although the country attained Independence on August 15, 1947, it formally became a sovereign, democratic and republic nation with the Constitution coming into force. Since then, Republic Day has been observed annually with nationwide pride and ceremonial grandeur. This year marks India’s 77th Republic Day, symbolising decades of constitutional governance, democratic values and national unity, while reaffirming the country’s commitment to justice, liberty, equality and fraternity for all citizens.
1. Republic Day Parade at Kartavya PathPresident Droupadi Murmu will lead the 77th Republic Day celebrations at Kartavya Path on Monday, January 26. The parade will commence at 9.30 am, while live television coverage will begin at 10.30 am. Entry gates for spectators will open from 7 am. The parade is designed to showcase India’s rich cultural heritage, military strength and technological progress, while also commemorating 150 years of the national song “Vande Mataram,” which has played a significant role in inspiring patriotism across generations.
2. Indian Air Force Flypast and Sindoor FormationThe celebrations will conclude with an aerial flypast by 29 Indian Air Force aircraft. A major highlight will be the special “Sindoor” formation, symbolising India’s air power and operational readiness. Fighter jets that participated in Operation Sindoor will take part in this display. The formation will include two Rafale jets, two Su-30 aircraft, two MiG-29 fighters and one Jaguar aircraft, creating a powerful visual representation of the Indian Air Force’s modern capabilities.
3. Cultural Performances Along Kartavya PathAround 2,500 cultural artists will perform along Kartavya Path during the parade. These performances will be synchronised and inspired by “Vande Mataram,” reflecting India’s freedom struggle, cultural diversity and journey towards becoming a self-reliant and developed nation. The cultural showcase aims to blend tradition with modernity, offering spectators a vibrant portrayal of India’s artistic heritage and evolving national identity.
4. Tableaux Showcasing States, UTs and MinistriesA total of 30 tableaux will roll down Kartavya Path under the themes “Swatantrata ka Mantra: Vande Mataram” and “Samriddhi ka Mantra: Aatmanirbhar Bharat.” Seventeen tableaux will represent states and Union Territories, highlighting Assam’s terracotta craft, Manipur’s agricultural progress and Himachal Pradesh’s identity as Dev Bhoomi. Thirteen tableaux from central ministries and services will also participate, including a special Indian Air Force tableau honouring veterans.
5. Chief Guests and Ceremonial TraditionsThe President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, will attend the parade as chief guests. As per tradition, the National Flag will be unfurled, followed by the National Anthem and a 21-gun salute using indigenous 105-mm Light Field Guns. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will begin the day by paying tributes at the National War Memorial before proceeding to the saluting dais at Kartavya Path.
6. Special Invitees and President’s AddressAround 10,000 special guests from diverse backgrounds will attend the celebrations, including para-athletics champions, farmers practising natural farming, beneficiaries rehabilitated under the PM SMILE scheme, scientists involved in ISRO missions such as Gaganyaan and Chandrayaan, and industry leaders linked to hydrogen production initiatives. On the eve of Republic Day, President Murmu will address the nation on January 25, with the speech broadcast across Akashvani and Doordarshan networks in multiple languages.
7. Tight Security and Traffic Arrangements in DelhiDelhi has been placed under heightened security ahead of the Republic Day parade. Central areas, including Kartavya Path and Raisina Hill, are under strict surveillance with over 1,000 high-definition CCTV cameras integrated with facial recognition systems. For the first time, Delhi Police will deploy AI-enabled smart glasses for enhanced threat detection. Multiple control rooms, a multi-layered security grid and traffic restrictions have been put in place, with advisories issued for commuters.
