Police on Friday arrested a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Minority Morcha, Hojai president Kamrul Haque Choudhury in Assam for allegedly trying to rape a woman.

A case was registered against him at Lanka police station in the central Assam district under IPC sections 376 (rape), 511 (attempting to commit punishable offences) and 506 (criminal intimidation).

Hojai district Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Suman Chakraborty said a woman under Lanka police station had lodged the complaint. He said the woman stated in her complaint that the accused tried to rape her at his house on May 11.

The police produced the accused before a local court at Sankardev Nagar in Hojai district on Friday which sent him to judicial custody.

Following the incident, the Assam BJP suspended Kamrul Hoque Choudhury from the party.
