Supreme Court judge Justice Mohan M Shantanagoudar died at a private hospital in Gurgaon as per a NDTV report, he was 62. He was admitted to the Medanta hospital due to a lung infection and was in the ICU. His condition was stated to be stable till late Saturday night but around 12.30 am, the doctors attending him confirmed his death. According to family members, Justice Shantanagoudar had expressed his desire that, if at all he dies, his wish is to be buried next to his mother, who had passed away in July 2020.

Justice Shantanagoudar belonged to Lingayat community, which traditionally buries dead persons and not cremate them. Justice Shantanagoudar born on May 5, 1958 and enrolled as an advocate in September 1980. He practiced for one year at Dharwad before shifting his practice to Bengaluru. He served as vice-chairperson of Karnataka State Bar Council from 1991 to 1993 and as chairperson of Karnataka State Bar Council during 1995 and 1996. He also served as State Public Prosecutor of Karnataka State from 1999 to 2002.He was appointed as additional judge of the Karnataka High Court on May 12, 2003 and was made permanent judge on September 24, 2004.On transfer, he was sworn-in as judge of High Court of Kerala. He assumed charge as acting Chief Justice of Kerala High Court on August 1, 2016. He was sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court on September 22, 2016.He was elevated as Judge of the Supreme Court of India on February 17, 2017.
