Kolkata, April 20 The police on Monday arrested three BJP workers in connection with a shooting in Gosaba, West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district, in which a Trinamool Congress worker was shot while returning home on his motorbike.

The incident took place in the Bhupendrapur area of the Shambhungar gram panchayat in Gosaba on Sunday night. Following the incident, the local Trinamool Congress leadership lodged a complaint against the BJP workers with the local police.

According to the police, the name of the injured Trinamool worker is Dibyendu Gayen, a resident of the Shambhungar area. While returning home, he was accompanied by Trinamool Congress booth president Palash Mandal. It is learnt that the two were returning home on a bike after a party meeting on Sunday night. Palash was riding the bike, and Dibyendu was pillion riding. Suddenly, four or five miscreants allegedly came from behind and fired at the Trinamool worker.

Gayen fell on the road and was shot in the right leg. After the shooting incident, he was rushed to Canning Sub-Divisional Hospital. Later, he was shifted to Chittaranjan Hospital in Kolkata, where he is undergoing treatment.

Trinamool booth president Palash Mondal said that they have a congregation on April 21 and had gone to a party meeting to discuss that. While returning, some miscreants attacked them. He alleged that there were four or five miscreants and was able to identify one of them as a BJP worker, named Bhola Pramanik.

The Trinamool said that the BJP has no presence in the Gosaba area and, therefore, their workers are being targeted.

On the other hand, the BJP claimed that this incident was a fallout of a factional conflict within Trinamool. The BJP alleged that Trinamool "is attacking itself due to fear of defeat in Gosaba".

A senior officer of Baruipur Police District said, "Based on a complaint, three persons have been arrested in connection with last night's shooting incident. They will be produced in court on Monday afternoon. The injured person has been shifted to a hospital in Kolkata, where he is undergoing treatment. Investigation is on."

According to the police, the three arrested persons are known as local BJP workers.
