Kolkata, May 13 Police arrested three brothers associated with the Trinamool Congress in connection with multiple serious criminal cases in East Burdwan district’s Katwa, triggering fresh political controversy in the region.

The accused -- local Trinamool Congress leader Babulal Sheikh, Youth Trinamool Congress leader Kochi Sheikh, and Chhattu Sheikh -- were arrested on Tuesday by officers of Katwa Police Station. All three are members of the same family, police said on Wednesday.

The trio was taken to Katwa Sub-Divisional Hospital for mandatory medical examination before being produced before a local court in the afternoon.

According to police officials, several cases have been registered against the accused under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Investigators said the group had allegedly been involved in intimidation and exerting influence in the locality for an extended period, creating an atmosphere of fear among residents.

Police have reportedly sought custody of the accused for further investigation.

The arrests have intensified political tensions in Katwa, with leaders from rival parties exchanging sharp allegations.

Newly elected BJP legislator from Katwa Krishna Ghosh accused the previous Trinamool Congress administration of sheltering criminal elements.

“Such anti-social elements flourished during the Trinamool regime. They were allegedly protected by the ruling establishment. Now the administration is performing its duty, and legal action will be taken against the accused,” Ghosh said.

Meanwhile, family members of the accused have denied all allegations, claiming that the three men were falsely implicated in politically motivated cases.

According to them, police had initially summoned the accused before formally arresting them.

The incident has sparked widespread debate in local political circles, as police continue their investigation into the matter.

Since the declaration of the West Bengal Assembly election results, police have started taking action against Trinamool Congress leaders and workers accused of creating a reign of terror in the state.
