Kolkata, May 19 A Trinamool Congress block president has been arrested in north Bengal's Cooch Behar district for allegedly indulging in violence and molestation, said the police on Tuesday.
The police have arrested Abdul Kader, the Trinamool Congress president of Cooch Behar I-B block. The police arrested him from Guriahati II gram panchayat areas on Monday.
He was produced in court on Monday afternoon. According to police sources, there are allegations of vandalism, looting and molestation against him, before the West Bengal Assembly elections. Based on a complaint over these allegations, the Trinamool leader has been arrested.
This marks the second high-profile arrest of a Trinamool block president in the region within a matter of days, signalling a sweeping crackdown on political violence following the recent change of guard in the state administration.
A few days back, Shuvankar Dey, the Trinamool President for Cooch Behar Block II, was arrested in connection with an attack on the convoy of the current Chief Minister, Suvendu Adhikari, dating back to August 5, 2025.
It may be recalled that in August last year, Adhikari's convoy was attacked in Cooch Behar district of north Bengal where he had gone to lead a protest rally.
The arrest of two Trinamool Congress block presidents in Cooch Behar has started a heated discussion in political circles.
Since the BJP formed a government in the state, there has been a crackdown on illegal and criminal activities of Trinamool Congress leaders. The police have been active in taking action against anti-social elements and often acting against Trinamool Congress leaders against whom allegations of breaking the law were raised.
Recently, Trinamool Congress councillor of Baranagar Municipality in North 24 Parganas district, Shantanu Majumdar alias Mejo has been arrested on charges of extortion, He is the councillor of ward number 14 of Baranagar.
On May 9, police arrested Trinamool Congress councillor Bhishmadev Karmakar in Berhampore, of Murshidabad district who was accused of obstructing Congress leader Adhir Chowdhury's Assembly election campaign.
On May 6, a Trinamool councillor was arrested on charges of punching and breaking a police officer's nose in Hooghly's Serampore. Trinamool councillor Rajesh Shah alias Kukua however alleged political vendetta against him.
On May 5, a Trinamool Congress councillor named Amirul Sheikh Islam was arrested again under the Arms Act. He is the councillor of ward number 14 of Pujali Municipality in Diamond Harbour of South 24 Parganas district.
