Trinamool delegation not allowed to meet JNU students

A day after violence swept the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus leaving over 30 students injured, a delegation of the Trinamool Congress led by former Union Minister Dinesh Trivedi was not allowed to meet the students here.

The delegation, led by Trivedi, and comprising party MPs Sajda Ahmed, Manas Bhunia and other leaders like Vivek Gupta, arrived at the JNU to express solidarity with students but were stopped at its main entrance by the police.

On Sunday, violence swept the JNU as several masked individuals, both male and female, thrashed students, including girls, and teachers inside the varsity campus with wooden and metal rods.

Following the violence inside JNU camous, the police has deployed heavy force around the campus and also closed the Baba Gang Nath Marg for traffic.

Two office-bearers of the Jawaharal Nehru University Students Union (JNUSU), including President Aishe Ghosh - who was reportedly hit over the eye with an iron rod, received severe injuries. They accused RSS' student wing ABVP for the rampant violence in the campus.

Hostel rooms, and lobbies were vandalised during the assault while several vehicles standing on roads were damaged by the unidentified miscreants.

The situation turned violent after masked goons attacked a peace march being carried out by teachers and students against the violence in campus.

Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, senior Congress leader Ajay Maken, Delhi Congress chief Subhash Chopra, CPI-M leader Brinda Karat, BJP leader Vijay Goel and others met the injured students at the AIIMS trauma centre.
