Only two persons offered prayers at Jama Masjid in Siliguri here on the occasion of Eid-Ul-Fitr on Monday as mosques across the country remained closed for public in a bid to avoid gatherings and prevent the spread of coronavirus.

This year, Eid is being celebrated amid a nationwide lockdown imposed as a precautionary measure to contain the spread of COVID-19.

"People are not allowed to offer prayers at the mosques due to lockdown. People are following directions and are offering prayers at their homes. Only five people are allowed to stay and offer prayers in a mosque," Gulam Barkati, imam at the mosque, told here.

He said that only five people or less are offering prayers at mosques across the city.

Eid-ul-Fitr marks the conclusion of the holy month of Ramzan, which is a month of fasting and prayer for the Muslim community.

"I also extend my wishes to the people of the country and the city on the occasion of Eid. We prayed for the end of this pandemic as well as for the welfare of our nation. There are no gatherings in any mosques anywhere in the city," the imam said.

Barkati also urged the people to follow all the government directions to prevent the spread of the deadly virus.
