Barabanki (UP), Oct 1 A 22-year-old man and his girlfriend allegedly ended their lives by suicide in Barabanki on Saturday after their families refused to allow them to marry.

The couple, who had been in a relationship for five years, consumed a poisonous substance after the woman’s family finalised her marriage to another man from the same village.

The young man died while being taken to the hospital, and the woman died during treatment at a local community health centre.

Their families were preparing to perform the last rites when the police arrived on the scene, having been alerted by locals. Police took the bodies into custody and sent them for post-mortem examination.

Tikaitnagar SHO Angad Pratap Singh said that the couple belonged to the same community and social class, but their parents were against their relationship.

According to the police, the man tried to persuade the woman’s parents that he would do well in life and even go to Mumbai to find work, but they were unmoved.

The couple met at a shop in the city, had lunch and bought sweets. They then consumed a poisonous substance late at night and did not go home. Their families started searching for them, and on Saturday, they found them unconscious with a white substance oozing out of their mouths, police said.

The post mortem will be done on Sunday to ascertain the actual cause of death.
