Lucknow, May 5 Uttar Pradesh State Women Commission Chairperson Babita Singh Chauhan on Tuesday rejected allegations made by outgoing West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee regarding misconduct during the election process, calling them baseless and politically motivated, while crediting the BJP for strengthening women’s safety and empowerment.

Reacting to Banerjee’s claims regarding alleged physical assault on women during the elections, Chauhan said such statements were an attempt to deflect from electoral defeat. "When she has nothing left, she is bound to say something. If agencies were really involved in wrongdoing, such a massive majority would not have come in favour of the BJP," Chauhan told IANS.

She further remarked that public sentiment in West Bengal had turned against the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government, citing what she described as widespread dissatisfaction among citizens. "There is a saying that excess of anything is harmful. I visit Bengal quite often, and especially in Kolkata, people were extremely troubled by the governance. The level of frustration among the public is difficult to fully describe," she added.

Chauhan also claimed that while a section of society may have supported Banerjee due to "self-interests," the broader population was disillusioned, which she said was reflected in the voting trends. "The rest of the public was troubled, and that is visible in the voting percentage," she noted.

Addressing the allegations of violence against women voters, the UP Women's Commission chief categorically denied any such incidents. "What they are saying is completely wrong. There is no need for additional proof when the evidence is visible. Women’s voter turnout has been extremely high, which clearly shows that women feel safe and supported," she said.

She credited the policies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for prioritising women’s safety and empowerment. "Under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, there has been a strong focus on ensuring women’s security and providing them with necessary facilities. There is no question of violence — even disrespect towards women is not tolerated," she asserted.

Chauhan also emphasised that women voters today are politically aware and do not require additional mobilisation. "Women are already aware and actively participate in voting. They understand that if they want to safeguard their rights or secure opportunities, they must support the right political platform," she said.

Highlighting initiatives in Uttar Pradesh, Chauhan praised Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for implementing schemes aimed at women’s empowerment. "Several programmes have been launched in Uttar Pradesh to strengthen women’s position in society. On behalf of all women, I express gratitude to the Chief Minister," she added.
