Rising tensions involving Iran, the United States, and Israel have triggered concerns over a potential global energy crisis, particularly affecting vital oil transport routes. The Strait of Hormuz, controlled by Iran, has witnessed disruptions in the movement of oil tankers amid the escalating situation. However, in a positive development for India, two LPG vessels carrying nearly 94,000 metric tonnes of fuel have safely crossed the sensitive maritime corridor and are now heading toward the country, offering reassurance over uninterrupted energy supplies despite the prevailing geopolitical tensions.

According to the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, two LPG carriers—BW TYR and BW ELM—have successfully navigated through the Strait of Hormuz and are en route to India. The BW TYR is expected to arrive in Mumbai on March 31, while BW ELM is scheduled to reach New Mangalore on April 1. The arrival of these vessels is likely to prevent any immediate disruption to India’s LPG supply chain, ensuring stability in fuel availability across regions dependent on imported gas resources.

To safeguard Indian maritime interests, the government has implemented enhanced monitoring measures for Indian vessels and crew operating in the region. Over the past 24 hours, no untoward incidents involving Indian-flagged ships have been reported. At present, 18 Indian-flagged vessels and 485 Indian sailors are active in the western Persian Gulf area. The Directorate General of Shipping is maintaining continuous coordination with ship owners, RPSL agencies, and Indian embassies to closely track developments and ensure the safety of personnel and cargo in the volatile zone.

Meanwhile, authorities have reassured the public that adequate reserves of petrol and diesel are available across the country, and there is no need to panic. Citizens have been urged not to believe in rumours regarding fuel shortages. Gas supply to urea manufacturing plants has been maintained at around 70 to 75 percent of the six-month average, ensuring continued agricultural support. Additionally, arrangements are being made to secure extra supplies of LNG and RLNG to further strengthen the country’s energy preparedness during the ongoing global uncertainty.

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints, facilitating a significant share of global oil trade. Given its strategic importance, the Indian Navy has deployed warships in the region to assist commercial vessels navigating the route. These precautionary measures are aimed at ensuring safe passage for merchant ships and maintaining the steady flow of energy supplies, especially during a period marked by heightened geopolitical risks and disruptions to international shipping lanes.
