At least one was killed, and seven others were rescued after two houses collapsed in Uttar Pradesh's Varanasi near Kashi Vishwanath Temple on Tuesday morning, August 6. The NDRF team is at the spot, and search and rescue operations are underway.
According to Varanasi police, one woman died and seven people were rescued. Police Commissioner Mohit Agrawal said eight people were trapped under the debris when houses collapsed early on Tuesday.
Search and Rescue Operation Underway
Kaushal Sharma, a senior police officer, said houses collapsed due to heavy rainfall in the city. A team from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and local police were present at the spot as the rescue operations were underway.
"The rescue operation is about to finish now. 9 people in the family were trapped here, all of them were taken out and sent to a hospital. A woman constable who was on duty here has been injured and sent to BHU Trauma Centre where she is out of danger. A woman admitted at Kabir Chaura Hospital has been declared dead in a hospital. Our priority is to carry out rescue operations and help the injured," said Varanasi Police Commissioner Mohit Agarwal.
Varanasi Division Commissioner Kaushal Raj Sharma said, "Two houses collapsed here in which 9 people were trapped. 2 of them came out on their own and 7 others were rescued. One woman has lost her life and the remaining are under treatment. The rescue operation is almost over. Our next priority is to clean the debris and restore the supply of water and electricity in the houses...The upper floor of the house has collapsed and the people on those floors were trapped."
