Bharatiya Janata Party leader Vijender Gupta has been nominated as the Speaker of the Delhi Assembly, PTI reported. Mohan Singh Bisht is expected to take on the role of Deputy Speaker.

Gupta, an MLA from Rohini, has been a key figure in Delhi politics. He won his seat in the recent assembly elections with a margin of over 37,000 votes, defeating Aam Aadmi Party candidate Pradeep Mittal. He has previously served as the Leader of the Opposition in the Delhi Assembly, president of BJP’s Delhi unit, a member of the Delhi Development Authority, and chairman of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi’s standing committee.

Gupta began his political career in 1980 with Janata Vidyarthi Morcha. In 1995, he became president of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha. His electoral journey started in 1997 when he was elected as a councillor in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. Over the years, he held key positions, including Chairman of the Law and General Purpose Committee and Deputy Chairman of the House Tax Committee. He has won municipal elections in Rohini three times.

In 2009, Gupta contested the Lok Sabha elections from Chandni Chowk but lost to Congress leader Kapil Sibal. He faced another setback in the 2013 Delhi Assembly elections against Arvind Kejriwal. However, he made a comeback in 2015 by winning the Rohini seat. He was one of the three BJP candidates elected that year. He retained his seat in 2020, defeating AAP’s Rajesh Nama Bansiwala by over 12,000 votes. In 2025, he secured another victory with the highest winning margin among BJP candidates.
