The Government of India has appointed Indian Foreign Service officer Nidhi Tewari as the Private Secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Department of Personnel & Training (DoPT) issued an official notification confirming the decision. Tewari, a 2014-batch IFS officer, currently serves as Deputy Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office. She will assume her new role at Level 12 of the pay matrix. Her appointment is on a co-terminus basis or until further orders.

Who is Nidhi Tewari?

Tewari has been part of the Prime Minister’s Office since January 2023. She first joined as Under Secretary in 2022 before being promoted to Deputy Secretary.

She is from Mehmurganj in Varanasi, the Lok Sabha constituency of Prime Minister Modi. She secured the 96th rank in the 2013 Civil Services Examination. Before joining the Indian Foreign Service, she worked as an Assistant Commissioner (Commercial Tax) in Varanasi while preparing for the exam.

Tewari previously served in the Ministry of External Affairs, working in the Disarmament and International Security Affairs Division. In the PMO, she played a key role in the Foreign and Security vertical, where she reported directly to National Security Advisor Ajit Doval. She handled critical areas, including External Affairs, Atomic Energy, and Security Affairs. She was also involved in matters related to Rajasthan.

During India’s G20 presidency, Tewari’s expertise in foreign policy made her an essential part of the government’s diplomatic efforts.
