Nitish Kumar-led Bihar government has issued an order to ban the use of auto rickshaws and e-autos for the transpiration of school children from April 1, 2025. The advisory was issued by the traffic department chief Sudhanshu Kumar on Monday toll district SSPs and SPs, including Patna and asked to take strict action against those who violate the instructions.

The decision was taken in January 2025 during a meeting chaired by the Bihar development commissioner. The authorities instructed schools, parents, and transport operators to follow the order.

Why Auto Ban for School Children?

The decision to ban school children from travelling in e-rickshaws and autos has been taken due to the rising number of road accidents, lack of safety measures in auto-rickshaws, overcrowding, and frequent violations of traffic rules. In cities like Patna, hundreds of autos transporting school children without proper permits have been involved in accidents. This step by the Transport Department aims to ensure children's safety and enforce traffic regulations.

Patna DTO Upendra Kumar Pal has clearly stated that autos are not safe for schoolchildren. Patna Traffic SP has also confirmed that transporting children to school in autos is illegal. Transport and auto unions have also raised concerns regarding schoolchildren's safety. All India Road Transport Workers Federation General Secretary Raj Kumar Jha and Auto Rickshaw Drivers Association President Pappu Yadav have supported the Transport Department’s decision, calling it a necessary step to protect children’s lives.
