Mumbai: The long-awaited reconstruction of the Carnac railway flyover near Masjid Bunder is racing toward completion, with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) setting a firm deadline of June 10, 2025 for reopening the crucial East-West connector to traffic.

At a site inspection held on April 18, Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Abhijit Bangar issued strict directives to the contractor and local officials, emphasizing that all pending work must be completed within 53 days and any delays will not be tolerated.

The Carnac Bridge, which links Lokmanya Tilak Road to P. D’Mello Road, is a vital lifeline for South Mumbai, especially for traffic flowing near Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, Masjid Bunder, and Mohammed Ali Road. The original bridge was deemed unsafe and subsequently demolished, with reconstruction work taken up by the BMC’s Bridges Department.

Accompanied by Chief Engineer (Bridges) Uttam Shrote, Deputy Chief Engineer (City) Rajesh Mule, and other key officials, Bangar reviewed the ongoing work and laid out a detailed timeline for completion.

Work on the western side of the bridge is currently on track, while progress on the eastern side is being expedited. Of the 40 required girders, five have already reached the site from the fabrication facility in Daman, and eight pillars on the eastern stretch have been constructed.

Bangar emphasized the importance of parallel execution—ensuring that pedestal and bearing works continue alongside girder installation. He also instructed BMC engineers to maintain close coordination with the fabrication unit in Daman to prevent any material delays.

“Senior engineers must conduct regular site visits to ensure quality and pace are maintained,” Bangar stressed. “This bridge is critical to South Mumbai’s transport network, and it must be delivered on time.”

As the countdown begins, Mumbaikars can finally look forward to smoother connectivity in the city’s busy southern quarters.
