Mumbai: Ahead of Holikadahan on March 13, 2025, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued a strict warning against the unauthorised cutting of trees. The civic body has made it clear that violations will result in severe legal consequences, including fines and possible imprisonment.

BMC officials have urged citizens to refrain from felling trees and to report any such activities to the local police or municipal authorities. Complaints can be registered through BMC’s toll-free helpline at 1916.

Jitendra Pardeshi, Superintendent of Gardens and Member Secretary of the Tree Authority, emphasized that unauthorized tree felling is a punishable offense under Section 21 of the Maharashtra (Urban Areas) Protection and Preservation of Trees Act, 1975. Offenders may face fines ranging from Rs 1,000 to Rs 5,000 per offense, and in severe cases, imprisonment from one week to one year.

The BMC has called on Mumbaikars to play an active role in preserving the city's greenery by protecting and nurturing trees. “Every citizen must safeguard nature and the trees that provide us with oxygen. We urge the public to cooperate fully,” Pardeshi added.

Citizens are encouraged to stay vigilant and report any incidents of illegal tree-cutting to help keep Mumbai’s environment green and sustainable.
