UGC to Grant LOIs to Five Top Foreign Universities Under Maharashtra’s International EduCity Initiative

Under the Maharashtra Government’s “Mumbai Rising – Creating an International Education City” initiative, the University Grants Commission (UGC) will formally grant Letters of Intent (LOIs) to five internationally renowned foreign universities at a special event scheduled for June 14, 2025, in Mumbai. The universities include the University of Aberdeen, University of York, University of Western Australia, Illinois Institute of Technology, and Istituto Europeo di Design (IED).

The programme will be graced by Dharmendra Pradhan, Union Minister of Education as the Chief Guest. Distinguished presence includes Devendra Fadnavis, Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Eknath Shinde, Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Ajit Pawar, Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra and Chandrakant Patil, Higher & Technical Education Minister.

Under the guidance of the Government of Maharashtra, this International EduCity, being developed by CIDCO, will provide the opportunity for students across India to learn from globally recognized educators, ensuring the development of an informed society, facilitating multicultural exchange, and fostering collaboration between students and faculty from diverse backgrounds.

This initiative aims to make international standard education accessible within India by establishing foreign university campuses in the state. As a part of the International EduCity project top 10 Foreign University campuses are planned within a 5-kilometer radius of Navi Mumbai International Airport. This will be the first-of-its-kind International EduCity in the country.  

This project will position Navi Mumbai & Mumbai as a global education hub and it will be one of the biggest driver to achieve one trillion economy by Maharashtra State and five a trillion economy by India till year 2029.
