Mumbai: Mumbaikars may finally get relief from pothole-ridden roads this monsoon, as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has set a strict deadline of May 31, 2025, to complete its ongoing cement concretization project. In a major policy shift, the BMC has also banned any digging on newly concretized roads, ensuring that freshly built roads remain durable and pothole-free.

BMC Commissioner and Administrator Bhushan Gagrani has directed officials to implement micro-planning, set road-wise completion dates, and coordinate with utility agencies to avoid delays. He also stressed that ward offices and central agencies must strictly enforce the no-digging rule to maintain road quality. Senior engineers have been instructed to conduct surprise site inspections, especially at night, to monitor progress and ensure compliance.

During a high-level meeting, officials cited delays caused by water, sewerage, and other utility infrastructure work. Gagrani ordered these agencies to adhere to strict timelines to prevent further disruptions.

The BMC also took note of complaints from citizens and local representatives regarding missing barricades, debris, and cement-filled stormwater drains. The commissioner instructed officials to take immediate corrective action.

Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Abhijit Bangar announced that completed roads would be marked with thermoplastic lane markings, zebra crossings, cat eyes, and intersection grids to enhance safety and aesthetics. Contractors will also be held accountable for fixing potholes on roads that remain unfinished before the monsoon.

With 701 km of roads under construction, the BMC is working at an accelerated pace to complete the project on time, ensuring smoother, safer roads for Mumbaikars this monsoon.
