Navi Mumbai: With temperatures rising steadily across the state, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has issued an advisory urging citizens to take precautions against heatstroke. The civic body has warned that heatwaves, often considered a "silent disaster," can pose serious health risks, especially during the summer months from March to May.

According to NMMC, a heatwave occurs when temperatures exceed the normal maximum by 3°C for three consecutive days or rise above 45°C for two days in a row. To combat the effects of extreme heat, the public health department has provided a list of dos and don’ts.

Preventive Measures

Residents are advised to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and consuming homemade drinks such as lemon water, buttermilk, and fruit juices. It is also recommended to wear loose, light-colored clothing and use caps, scarves, or umbrellas while stepping out in the sun. The advisory suggests avoiding direct sunlight between 12 PM and 3 PM, refraining from strenuous activities, and never leaving children or pets inside parked vehicles.

Vulnerable Groups at Risk

NMMC has highlighted that infants, young children, outdoor workers, pregnant women, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions, such as heart disease or high blood pressure, are particularly vulnerable to heat-related illnesses. The civic body has urged families to monitor elderly or sick individuals living alone to prevent health complications.

Healthcare Preparedness

Municipal Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde assured citizens that all municipal hospitals and urban health centers are following government-issued guidelines to provide necessary medical assistance in case of heatstroke. Citizens experiencing symptoms of heat exhaustion are advised to seek immediate medical attention at the nearest NMMC health center.

With temperatures expected to soar further, the NMMC has urged the public to stay alert, take necessary precautions, and prioritize health and safety during the heatwave season.
