Navi Mumbai: In a major step towards sustainable water management, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has mandated the use of tertiary-treated recycled water for all approved construction projects in the city. To reinforce this initiative, NMMC held a special meeting with builders, architects, and civil contractors, led by Municipal Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde.
With Navi Mumbai witnessing rapid urban development, the high consumption of potable water in construction has become a growing concern. Given the declining rainfall and potential future water shortages, the civic body is actively promoting the use of treated wastewater to conserve drinking water for essential needs.

Assistant Director of Town Planning, Somnath Kekaan, emphasized that integrating tertiary-treated water into construction and industrial use will enhance water conservation efforts and strengthen Navi Mumbai’s reputation as a leader in sustainable urban planning.
Providing technical insights, Additional City Engineer Arvind Shinde detailed NMMC’s seven advanced sewage treatment plants, which recycle wastewater for non-drinking purposes. He further highlighted that two tertiary treatment plants in Kopar Khairane and Airoli currently supply 40 MLD of treated water to 55 industries and 11 RMC (Ready-Mix Concrete) plants. Efforts are underway to expand its adoption further across industrial and construction sectors.
To formalize this initiative, Dr. Kailas Shinde issued an official circular on February 12, 2025, urging all developers to prioritize tertiary-treated water for construction. Attendees at the meeting—builders, architects, and contractors—welcomed the move and pledged their support, recognizing the urgent need for sustainable water management in the city’s growth.
By enforcing this eco-friendly policy, NMMC is taking a proactive step towards environmental responsibility and efficient water resource utilization, ensuring that Navi Mumbai remains at the forefront of sustainable urban development.
