Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) will accelerate waste-to-energy and waste-to-gas projects, Municipal Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde announced during an inspection of the solid waste management site in Turbhe. He was accompanied by City Engineer Shirish Aradwad.

The visit was part of preparations for Swachh Survekshan 2024, as Navi Mumbai aims to improve its ranking in the Super Swachh League.

Enhancing Waste Processing Efficiency

Navi Mumbai generates around 750 metric tons of waste daily, which is scientifically processed at the Turbhe landfill-based waste management site. Organic waste is converted into compost, while dry waste is transformed into Refuse-Derived Fuel (RDF) for industries such as cement factories, chemical plants, and thermal power stations. Additionally, coconut husks are repurposed into coco peat, fiber, and coir products.

Dr. Shinde stressed improving internal cleanliness at the site and directed further tree plantation efforts, particularly using bamboo and native species to enhance biodiversity.

Fast-Tracking Construction & Demolition Waste Processing

The Commissioner also reviewed the ongoing development of the Construction & Demolition (C&D) Waste Processing Facility, instructing officials to accelerate its completion. He suggested that crushed sand, gravel, and paver blocks produced at the site be utilized in municipal projects and mandated the formulation of regulations ensuring their use by contractors.

Waste-to-Energy & Public Awareness Initiatives

To promote sustainable waste management, Dr. Shinde called for the expedited implementation of waste-to-energy and waste-to-gas projects. Additionally, he stressed the importance of public awareness, recommending that school students visit the site to understand waste processing techniques.

With Turbhe’s solid waste management site playing a vital role in maintaining Navi Mumbai’s high cleanliness standards, the NMMC is actively integrating new technologies under Dr. Shinde’s leadership to make the facility more efficient and environmentally friendly.
