Navi Mumbai: Belapur police have booked a 33-year-old man from Taloja for allegedly posting a derogatory message about Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his WhatsApp status. The accused reportedly shared the post with the intent of creating discord between two religious communities, said police.

The message was posted on Thursday evening, and later that night, a case was registered at Belapur police station.

The accused has been identified as Mukhtar Nurmohammad Sayyed, a resident of Anegha Building, Ghot Camp, Taloja, Raigad district. According to the complaint, Sayyed's WhatsApp status contained derogatory remarks about the Prime Minister of India.

"It appears that the accused shared the post with the intent of inciting religious discord. He also circulated the video on social media," the complaint stated. Later, Sayyed deleted the status and the video from his mobile gallery to prevent authorities from retrieving it as evidence.

A case has been registered against him under Sections 299, 302, and 238(c) of the Indian Penal Code, along with Section 66D of the Information Technology Act. Additionally, the police have issued a notice under Section 35(3) of the BNNS Act, directing him to appear at the police station as required.
