Panvel: The Hindu crematorium at Swarg Har, Sector-14, operated by Panvel Municipal Corporation, is in a dire state, with grieving families facing financial burdens and inadequate facilities. Local activist Prayesh Gogate, a member of Bharat Raksha Manch (Konkan Province), has announced an indefinite hunger strike from March 23 if the civic body fails to address the issues within 20 days.

Families performing last rites at the crematorium are reportedly being charged fees for essential ritual materials, adding to their grief. Additionally, Panvel Municipal Corporation levies fees for cremation services using the gas pipeline system. The crematorium also lacks basic amenities such as proper seating, functional restrooms, and a clean water supply, making it difficult for mourners to conduct final rites in a dignified manner.

Speaking about the issue, Gogate said, “It is unacceptable that people are being forced to pay for essential religious rituals during their most vulnerable moments. The civic body must take immediate action to provide these services free of cost and improve the crematorium’s infrastructure.”

Locals have raised repeated complaints about the deteriorating condition of the crematorium, but authorities have allegedly ignored them. Gogate has demanded urgent action and warned that if the demands are not met within 20 days, he will begin an indefinite hunger strike against the Panvel Municipal Corporation.

The situation has sparked outrage among residents, who are now urging the civic body to act before the issue escalates further. The ball is now in the Panvel Municipal Corporation’s court to resolve the grievances before the March 23 deadline.
