The Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) has floated a second tender to appoint a contractor for setting up a 15 million-liter capacity water recycling plant at the Kamothe sewage treatment center. The Rs 73.61 crore project aims to treat and repurpose wastewater for public parks, sanitation facilities, vehicle washing, and industrial use.

With a daily requirement of 220 million liters, Panvel faces a 50 MLD water deficit during summers. To tackle this issue, PMC Commissioner Mangesh Chitale initiated the project in line with the central government’s directive to recycle 20% of the urban water supply. However, due to a lack of competitive bids in the initial tender, Additional Commissioner Kailas Gawde has relaunched the bidding process.

Once a contractor is selected, the project is expected to be completed within 1.5 years. The recycled water will support agriculture, industries, and horticulture, reducing dependency on potable water. Following this, PMC also plans a 5 MLD wastewater recycling project for Panvel City, according to Water Supply Department Deputy Engineer Vilas Chavan.

If urban demand for treated water remains low, the Navi Mumbai International Airport could utilize it for air-conditioning and cooling systems, as per municipal sources.
